Internet Class: Dogen’s Shikantaza

“The Way is originally perfect and all-pervading. How could it be contingent upon practice and realization”  ~Eihei Dogen

This provocative statement opens Fukanzazengi [Universal Promotion of the Principles of Zazen], Dogen Zenji’s first communication written upon his return to Japan from China in 1227. This brief document provides a concise and comprehensive set of instructions for Zen meditation that ties together underlying Buddhist principles with sitting practice.
