Baduanjin qigong (八段錦) is a most common series of forms of qigong exercise. This series is most commonly translated as Eight Pieces of Brocade. The form’s name refers to how its eight movements characterize and impart a brocade-like quality, to the body’s vital energy. Baduanjin functions as a medical intervention designed to generate and to maintain good health. However, it is also often practiced by martial artists as a supplementary exercise.

Benefits

Formal research indicates the following benefits. “Several systematic reviews have shown that Baduanjin exercise can be effective in reducing depression and anxiety symptoms in people with physical or mental illnesses and in improving different clinical conditions, including hypertension, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, type 2 diabetes mellitus, low back pain, and knee osteoarthritis. Previous systematic reviews have also shown that Baduanjin can improve sleep quality and quality of life in the rehabilitation of older people with common diseases, and can also affect physiological responses such as blood glucose and blood lipid levels.” [Source]
