This monthly group opens with a period of zazen (Zen sitting practice) followed by an open discussion on the integration of Zen Buddhism and psychoanalysis anchored in articles in the cumulative development of the interface between these two experiential and highly subjective disciplines. Study of both disciplines opens with Shakyamuni Buddha’s foundational teaching on dependent arising as explicated in in the Upanisa Sutra, a discourse on the causes and conditions of suffering and the path that leads to freedom from suffering. From this entry point, this inter-textual study group will examine various readings on Zen Buddhism & Psychoanalysis and explore a variety of Zen Buddhist and psychoanalytic concepts, with an eye toward enhancing personal practice and clinical efficacy. While the group facilitator recognizes and acknowledges many schools of Buddhism and forms of practice as well as a great variety of therapeutic modalities, in order to maintain focus and to facilitate a depth realization, the exclusive focus of the group is on Zen and psychoanalysis.
