Bendōwa (1231), “Wholehearted Practice of the Way” (Negotiating the Way, On the Endeavor of the Way) Dogen’s first writing in Japanese. It was hidden away for hundreds of years until it was found in a temple in Kyoto during the 17th Century. In 1684, it was included as the first fascicle of Dogen’s master work Shobogenzo (True Dharma Eye) Presently, as an introduction to zazen, Bendōwa is considered to contain the core or essence of all of Dogen’s teachings.
